Exploring Tierra del Fuego National Park is one of the essential experiences in Ushuaia. Just 12 kilometres from the city, the southernmost national park in the world combines subantarctic forest, glacial lakes and a fascinating history.
The excursion starts with pickup from your accommodation in Ushuaia. A professional guide travels with the group throughout, explaining the geography, the flora and the history of this corner of the world.
The first stop is the station of the End of the World Train. The train ride is included in the tour and covers the last 7 kilometres of the old route once used by the prisoners of Ushuaia in the early twentieth century, running through forest and peat bogs.
Inside the park, the route reaches Lake Acigami — formerly Lake Roca — a glacial lake framed by mountains and forest that marks the border between Argentina and Chile. It is one of the most photographed spots in the area.
The final stretch leads to Lapataia Bay, where the Pan-American Highway comes to an end. Boardwalks let you walk the shoreline and take in the very real sense of standing at the end of the world. There are stops along the way to observe the subantarctic forest and native wildlife.
Lasting roughly 4 to 5 hours and rated easy, this is a comfortable outing suitable for all ages. The tour finishes at the Ushuaia tourist pier.
