We leave Puerto Natales before dawn to enter Torres del Paine National Park at the hour when wildlife is most active. With a tracking guide and a private 4×4, we work the eastern sector of the park, reading fresh prints, scrapes and other signs left by puma.
There is no fixed trail. The day follows what the ground tells us, alternating stretches by vehicle with short walks and always watching from a distance, without disturbing the animals. Alongside puma, guanacos, condors, foxes and a wide range of Patagonian birds are a common sight.
The puma is a wild animal living free, so a sighting cannot be guaranteed. The sector we choose, the hour we start and the tracker’s work make the odds high, but nature offers no certainties. As a private excursion, the pace and the stops are yours to set, which matters a great deal if you have come to photograph.
