Walk on Grey Glacier — A once-in-a-lifetime Patagonia experience

The Ice Hike Grey Glacier is the only activity in Torres del Paine National Park that lets you walk directly on the glacier itself. This isn’t just a viewpoint hike — you’ll step onto the ancient ice of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field with crampons, ice axe and harness, guided by the expert team at Bigfoot Patagonia.

The adventure begins at Base Grey, Bigfoot’s base camp in the Playa Grey sector, just a 10-minute walk from Refugio and Camping Grey. There you’ll meet your guide, complete the safety forms and get fitted with all the equipment you need.

From the base, you’ll board a Zodiac inflatable boat that takes you directly to the glacier access point. Before stepping onto the ice, your guide will run a full safety briefing: movement techniques on glacial terrain, correct use of crampons, ice axe and harness. Then the adventure begins.

On the glacier you’ll explore crevasses, meltwater rivers, ice lagoons and ice tunnels — formations that change constantly, making every outing completely unique. The exact route is chosen by your guide based on current weather conditions and the most spectacular and safe sections of the glacier at that moment.

⚠️ Important: To join this activity you must spend at least one night at Refugio or Camping Grey. This excursion does not operate as a full-day trip from Puerto Natales.

How to get to Base Grey

Base Grey is located inside Torres del Paine National Park, in the Playa Grey sector. There are two main ways to get there:

🚢 Option 1 — Grey III boat (fastest)

A 45-minute crossing on the Grey III vessel from Hotel Lago Grey. You’ll need to reach the hotel first by regular or private transport from Puerto Natales. Bookings and schedules at lagogrey.com/navegacion

⛵ Option 2 — Lago Pehoé catamaran + trekking

Take the catamaran from Pudeto (30 min) to Paine Grande, then hike ~4 hours to Camping Grey. Tickets at catamaranpehoe.com

If you’re trekking the W Circuit or O Circuit, you’ll pass through Base Grey naturally — this is the most common way to join the activity.

What to wear for the Ice Hike

  • 👟 Semi-rigid boots with ankle support (mandatory — soft-soled trainers/sneakers not accepted)
  • 🧤 Gloves and warm hat

FAQ

Do I need previous glacier experience?

No. Your guide will run a complete safety briefing before you step onto the ice, covering crampon and ice axe technique. All you need is good physical fitness and the correct footwear.

How long do we spend on the glacier?

At least 2.5 hours of the total 5-hour activity takes place directly on the ice. The rest includes the Zodiac transfer and the walk across the glacial moraine.

How do I get to Base Grey?

Two options: the Grey III vessel from Hotel Lago Grey (45 min, quickest route), or the Lago Pehoé catamaran to Paine Grande followed by a ~4-hour trek to Camping Grey. If you’re doing the W or O Circuit, you’ll pass through naturally.

Can I do the Ice Hike as a day trip from Puerto Natales?

Not directly. At least one overnight stay at Refugio or Camping Grey is required. If you’d like to combine this with the W Circuit Classic or Express, our team can help you plan the logistics.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The activity may be cancelled due to adverse weather — a decision made solely by the guide. In that case you’ll be offered a full refund or the option to reschedule.

Can I cancel or reschedule my booking?

Yes. It depends on how far in advance you tell us:

  • More than 72 hours before: full refund or free rescheduling.
  • Less than 72 hours, or no show: no refund.
  • Cancellation due to weather or safety (the guide’s decision): full refund or rescheduling.
  • A participant the guide judges not physically fit for the activity: 50% refund.

What footwear do I need?

Semi-rigid boots with ankle support are mandatory. Running shoes or soft-soled trainers are not permitted for safety reasons. If you arrive without appropriate footwear, the guide may exclude you from the activity.

What is the minimum age?

14 years. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
